All of the recent turmoil in Egypt caused the government to demand that all of the Internet Service Providers(ISP's) to shut off all Internet services in the country. Many of the anti- govenrment demonstrations taking place were organized on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter prompting the shut down. Now as Americans watch the events unfold in Egypt many ask the question, could the U.S end up with a "Kill Switch" for the Internet.?
The Protecting Cyperspace as a National Asset Act was introduced by Sen. Joe Liberman in 2011 that would allow the president to provide "emergency measures" to protect our infrastructure if there is a vunerable part of our Internet that is or is about to be exploited. Some interpreted the "emergency measures" to mean that the president could turn off the Internet at random, but that was later denied by Sen. Joe Liberman as not true. Section 706 of the Communications Act gives the president the authority to take over networks if there is a threat of war without the authorization of Congress. The Internet bill that will be reintroduced this year by Sen. Liberman, will require Congress approval and is intended to protect U.S. web infrastructures from cyber attacks in order to protect our economy and way of life.
Even though the lawmakers insist that none of the new Internet protection legislation being proposed will violate the First Amendment, it still has many free speech advocates worried. The president doesn't have a physical switch that could turn off the Internet, nor is it likely that he or any other president could ever get the major ISP's- Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner to shut down service if requested. The president relies heavily on social networking sites to communicate, and the goverment relies on the Internet to function, so it is doubtful that the government would want to shut off Internet service. However, if serious cyber attacks did occur that could threaten the safety of our goverment, communication services, and other critical parts of our life should we have a way to tighten our Internet security to try to prevent or lessen these attacks?
i disagree with that. there is no reason to have a kill switch. the government has to much power already and giving them that will just further increase their over-sized egos further. why should we have to suffer cause one person or a group of people post something stupid online. thats what ip addresses are for. you cant hide your ip address from anyone that really wants to track it. if there is a threat the government should just track teh computer and shut it down.
ReplyDeletejustin
The gov. is suppose to protect the people. So, I believe that if a kill switch will help lesson or prevent attacks on our people then it should be issued. As long as it's being placed in the right hands and its use has good intentions.
ReplyDeleteChandellier
I think that it would be beneficial to have a kill switch. But it should only be used in the event of an attack by an extreme outside threat.
ReplyDeletelauren
that makes a good point. but still the government should not have any extra power. it already hold to much as it stands now. the original government system was suppose to be for teh people and run by the people. now it all seems that the government runs the people for itself. there really needs to be a kill switch for them and not on the citizens.
ReplyDeletejustin
I disagree with having a kill switch. Way too much people rely on the internet and if anything half as serious happened here in the U.S. as it did in egypt.. Well.. we wouldn't be having this blog here. ;)
ReplyDeleteAllA
I think that the internet should offer people better security and privacy. I also believe that if it's necessary, the government should have a "kill switch".
ReplyDeleteKayla
Justin you have a valid point and that makes me want to erase my comment lol. When put in that sense it shouldn't be and then again it should be. There should be a limit as to what they can and can't shut down.
ReplyDeleteChandellier
I do not agree with the government having a "Kill Switch." Many people use the internet to communicate with friends and family and even more people will be angry at the government. The government already has a lot of power and this "Kill Switch" will only give them more power over us.
ReplyDeleteJake
even with that said, we're not about to take power from the government any time soon so its better to have the protection avaliable if its needed. If a hacker is good enough he would make it harder to trace his IP address. A kill switch would stop that.
ReplyDeletelauren
I don't think that having a kill switch is the best option for our government. Shutting down the internet would shut down our entire country as well. As Americans, we use the internet for so many things that it would be almost impossible for us to go one day without it.
ReplyDeletejade
I dont think that a kill switch is required for the safety of the Nation. The government becomes more powerful every year with it's new laws and requlations the do not need to be passed. This is just another way for the government to have more power and control.
ReplyDeleteMax Konczal
I agree with Justin. The government really does already have too much power as it is. So giving them more, is just going to boost their large ego's.
ReplyDeleteKayla
even if a hacker was good enough there would still be the possibility that he or she could by pass the kill switch. hackers are very talented now. if it came down to it they would know how to bypaxss any and all restrictions. so a dire threat would have no problem getting pass a kill switch. and also look at it this way. the attack wont come through the internet so why shut it down. by someone saying they are going to destroy something that is a source of information that would be helpful to the military in preventing the disaster.
ReplyDeletejustin
I believe the kill switch could be very beneficial. It could help protect internet users from future cyber attacks.
ReplyDelete-Erica
I think i am more neutral, there are too many pros and cons with the whole situation. Yes, we depend all too much on the internet as Americans, and having it shut down on a whim would be devistating to many. But shouldn't we have some sort of protection from the outside, or even from within?
ReplyDeletelauren
OMG! thank you jade! like everywhere we go and do it all involves being online in some kind of way.. killing the internet means killing america.. its as simple as that! well unless your like anti-internet(living in the caves) this shouldnt matter for you..
ReplyDeleteAlla
I agree that the government should have a kill switch if it used for the purpose of saving lives and preventing attacks. If these are the reasons then I'm all for it.
ReplyDeleteI am a firm believer in the freedom of speech but I am also a firm believer in putting the safety of the nation before all else. A kill switch is not something that would be put out there just to silence a few political activists, it would be put in place as a national security measure. If a kill switch is what it will take to keep this nation safe, then so be it.
ReplyDeleteAngeline
I agree that the government should have a kill switch if it used for the purpose of saving lives and preventing attacks. If these are the reasons then I'm all for it.
ReplyDeleteRonnesha
thats kind of funny Alla. but you make a good point about killing america. we do stive on the internet. thats why the kill switch is a bad idea.
ReplyDeletejustin
I agree with Justin, an attack will not come through the internet. The government does the same thing as a hacker, they hack into our computers to see what we do.
ReplyDeleteJake
I agree with lauren. We will never gain control over the government. So i think we should let them do what they gotta do. I see it as a type of security not as a battle between government and the people.
ReplyDelete-Erica
I agree with your statement Angeline. I think it should be used only when necessary.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement Angeline. I think it should be used only when necessary.
ReplyDeleteRonnesha
as jake said the government hacks into our systems to see what we are doing. there was an incedent close to a year ago that had and advertisement that ended in ".gov" and when people logged onto that website everything was sent to a database in a government facility. that included all of the personal pictures, writings and everything those people had on their computers. they had no way of knowing that it had happened and also no way of stopping it. that is a major violation of privacy. thats why i stated that the government needs a kill switch on itself
ReplyDeletejustin
I think the killswitch should only be used for important situations/attacks on the internet. The internet helps people in their everyday life so, the killswitch will just make things worse for people.
ReplyDeleteBrittney
I think Max is right....(for once):) Our government already has so much control that it would be bad idea to have a kill switch. Who knows how long the internet could be shut down???
ReplyDeletejade
I agree that the government has too much power. This being said, I don't believe that the safety of the country is the area that we want to take power/control away from them.
ReplyDeleteAngeline
i agree with Alla the killswitch should not be enforced.
ReplyDeleteBrittney
I agree with the idea of having a "kill switch" for the internet. I believe the government would use it in an event to protect us not hurt us. It is for our safety.
ReplyDeleteAmy
I disargree with the whole killswitch mainly because I use the internet for many reasons. Without the internet, I can see myself now bored out my mind. :(
ReplyDeleteVictoria B.
I completely agree with Justin, the Government already has way too much control. And there is not reason for the Government to be able to limit or kill the internet, its like taking away free speech.
ReplyDeleteMichael
I agree that the government has too much power and having a killswitch would push that power too far. The government has all the protection they need from cyber attacks and what not, having a killswitch would only start problems that are not needed.
ReplyDeleteJonathan H
I agree with Ronnesha. If the government has a killswitch, then use it for the right reasons and protect America from attacks like these.
ReplyDeleteTripp Huff
Just another attempt by the government to gain more control over the lives of the unsuspecting American... how will Americans continue with their porn and internet shopping addictions if the internet is shut down? Americans are attacked everyday... by the government! This just goes to show... "guns don't kill people, the government does!"
ReplyDeleteRusty Shackleford
Dictated by Justin L.
I have neutral feelings about the "Killswitch" program. It is vital to our everyday living, but it will also help protect us from terrorism. The internet great to have at your fingertips, but it is not a necessity.
ReplyDeleteTianna
I believe the internet should be shut off if necessary. If the goverment feels that we are under attack then they should be able to shut off the internet.
ReplyDeleteAntoine Key
The killswitch is a good idea. (I guess..I don't know..I'm not in to the "Political adgenda"..)
ReplyDeleteTripp Huff
I agree with Justin, Michael, and Victoria! The killswitch thing is the dumbest idea ever, except for outlawing marijuana.
ReplyDeleteJonathan H
Jade has my vote. We use the internet for so many things. I cant stand it when my Internet stop working, so just think, how would we act if they murder our best friend Mr.Internet?
ReplyDeleteVictoria B.
I agree with Justin that the government has too much power, but I believe when it comes to the safety of the people they are there to protect. I believe the "kill switch" would only be used in times of emergency.
ReplyDeleteAmy
I AGREE WITH HARTSOE!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI diagree due to the fact that even if there was a anti-gov protest or attack on the country it would definitely not come through the internet, putting a kill switch on the internet would make even more people unhappy with the government and probably cause even larger protests.
ReplyDelete-Michael
Our government uses fear to slowly reduce our rights as Americans. If congress is allowed to install a national kill switch for web access, then what is to stop them from kill switching news broadcasts that exposes the already overwhelming coruption that exists today? Worse still is the fact that our lives are currently monitored without our knowledge, violating the US Constitution, all in an attept to provide a false sense of "security" to an oblivious public.
ReplyDeleteSamuel S.
I agree with Kayla. If the goverment feels the need to shut down the internet then they should be able to do it.
ReplyDeleteAntoine
the enforcing of a killswitch in my opinion is like physically gagging an individual to not speak. our first amendment specifically gives us the right to speak, peaceably assemble, religion, and to the press. take it as you want to but in the sense of reality that people have taken on these days, usage of the internet can fall into any of those categories listed in our first right. you speak your mind thru the internet on blogs such as here, u can assemble many people under one cause for either good or bad (depending on your views of what good and bad are), religiously because ppl are so tied into the internet for major and minor consequential things that some fad religions have formed via the internet, and the press which is a written form of the right of speech. impeding these rights is morally wrong and at the end of the day is bottom right unconstitutional. we have the right to know what is going on and have the option to find it. there should be no consequence for the truth. as someone once said "the truth shall set you free..." well what freedom are we looking for when the most important right is impeded on???? yes the government and the constitution has the right to evolve in terms of law making to fit the times that it is currently governing. but putting a "killswitch" is retarded. if u cnt put a killswitch on a semi-automatic firing weapon u cnt put a switch on the internet. u dnt want a gun to fire dnt shoot it. dnt want to see someone put their opinions on somethin or do somethin stupid or exploited than dnt look it up. simple as that. words dnt kill anyone nor media... actions do. so when they decide to put a "killswitch" on physical violence and things that can physically cause harm, then u can put a "killswitch" on the internet.
ReplyDeleteTai Heaven
I believe that there are some pros and cons for the "kill switch." In society today we rely primarely on the internet. I enjoy being able to keep up with family and friends that I dont get to see or talk to as much. I would be dissapointed in the internet not being available but we didnt have internet and these things before and if it helps to save the nation from any attack then agree with the kill switch.
ReplyDelete-Brittany E
I truly disagree!! There is absoulutely no need to have a KILL SWITCH!! The government already have too much power as it is now!! I truly think that would be to much authority for one person to have!! The internet is a part of my daily living!!
ReplyDeleteKandra A
I agree with Amy because the "Killswitch" would only be terminated for our safety. It's not like the govermnemt would like not having the resources or funding they are used to receiving.
ReplyDeleteTianna
I agree with Samuel, the government just thinks of us as a bunch of 5 year olds to keep under control. Much can not be said in our defence as we are in the 32nd country in the scale of education... Could they be slowly making us stupid?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteDavid
I agree and disagree.
ReplyDeleteFirst if the government have a kill switch and they can turn it off when ever.. it will be a disaster if they do that. But also having a kill switch isnt so bad IF...AND IF ONLY America is under attack by a cyber terrorist or being attack......
MARK G.
I agree with Rusty Shackleford... who happens to be a handsome, intelligent and competent man, if I do say so myself. I also agree with Johnathan H, LEGALIZE IT!!! The government wants to our pot, our guns, and our internet... what is the average American supposed to do without their favorite hobbies? The government wants to force us to watch television where they use their secret mind control via subliminal messaging. REVOLT!
ReplyDeleteStill Rusty Shackleford
Still being dictated by Justin L.
i dont believe that the gov. should have one. why should we get punished for someone elses stupid actions?
ReplyDelete-sarah
I disagree with the 'kill switch'. The internet is used for way to many things, businesses and the government will be lost without it. Computers have an IP address for tracking, such as threats. People in general put there business on the internet, so the government can use the internet to find threats towards the government. Either way the government will do what they want for their advantage, no freedom of using the internet.
ReplyDeleteJessica
I agree with Angeline. We need to keep the safety of the nation before all else!!
ReplyDelete-Brittany
i agree with Samuel S. the government does fear us. but bro-hem they already censor media outlets. y do u think u cnt find any videos at all of the bombings on the pentagon? or they conceal so much information about our troops in combat? we are in war wit the government that governs. matter of fact. we do have the right to dissolve any form of government that has become to destructive or megalomanic. reason y we dnt is because of fear.
ReplyDeleteTai Heaven
I agree with Brittany E. because if it comes down to the safety of the nation its fine to have a kill switch other than that..if we arent under-attack or being attack in the cyber space then lay off with the kill switch
ReplyDeleteMark G
i agree with rusty (dictated by justin) how will americans watch their porn or buy anything? the need their porn. And buying stuff online is the easiest way to get stuff from across seas. and they got some good stuff. Get it straight from china without paying the inflation cost in america. Were going to get it anyways, why not get it cheaper
ReplyDelete-sarah
I with Sarah and Justin.
ReplyDeleteJessica
It is true that Americans rely on Internet, so can you imagine how devistating it would be for someone (ex. terrorists) to hack into our Internet and destory it? I think it's a good thing to have a "Kill Switch." I mean the government wouldn't be shutting it down to get rid of people's pornography or explicit music, only if absolutely neccessary!
ReplyDeleteHaily M
I agree with Brittney!! If the kill switch was to come about it should only be used for emergency purposes only && people use the internet daily and many people wouldnt know what to do without the internet!
ReplyDelete~Kandra A
The government shouldn't have a killswitch. The government has too much power. Although they do already have th power to destroy the world, and they havn't screwed that up.... yet. Then you never know they could also end up censoring the internet like they did to its cousin, the T.V.
ReplyDeleteDavid
I agree with Tianna .. why would the government enjoy shutting down money they could be making from funding and resources?
ReplyDeleteHaily M
I agree with Ame. Good and bad things can come with a kill switch.
ReplyDeleteViktor O
If they shut down the internet how will I get Acupulco Gold directly from Mexico? Salvia just wont do it these days... Pot, porn, and propaganda, the only reasons for using the internet... and they government wants to take it away...
ReplyDeleteRusty
Well Sarah, it is not so much punishment for others actions, as it is a controling measure to blind the masses of civil rights violations. If our government uses force against assembled citizens, which by the way there is a bill currently bieng pushed to drasticly limit our 1st ammendment right to freedom of assembly, they would need a way to prevent it from reaching the public. An internet based kill switch would allow the government to stop the presses so to speak. The same thing is used in communist countries to regulate information and distribute propaganda to keep the public under the governmental thumb.
ReplyDeleteSamuel S.
I think it would be a good idea. But it should be approved by the people.
ReplyDeleteViktor O
I disagree with a post claiming they "believe a Kill Switch would be beneficial." I do not see how a kill switch could be beneficial in anyway, seeing as our entire country is becoming more and more internet and computer operated. Corporations and businesses would simply fail and shut down. I cannot see how a potential action of so much loss can be beneficial in any way.
ReplyDelete-Sarah Werkin
I think that if the Government thinks we should have a kill switch, then I agree. Whatever is best for our country, I am for.
ReplyDeleteEmily Lipari
I don't agree with it. They shouldnt be able to kill the internet just because something that is going on, or because of one person.
ReplyDeleteCandice
I beleive that the government should be able to have a kill switch to protect us because that is their job. However, this switch should not be flipped on a whim. They need to have hard evidence that a serious attack is occuring.
ReplyDelete-Calamity Manz
I am not sure if i agree or disagree with a "killswitch". I agree with the validity on both sides, but just like with any other political debate their are pros/cons to everything. If the overall point is for protection and not control i think it is something that may need to be put in place. But if this is another government bully tactic then definitely a BAD idea.
ReplyDeleteDee B.
I agree with justin, the government does already have to much power!
ReplyDeleteCandice Goen
I a "Kill Switch" needs to be used then used it for EMERGENCY PURPOSES ONLY!! We are all used to using the internet but if we are in danger then I say it's ok. We can watch the news to see what's going and to get important information.
ReplyDeleteTiffany J
I do not agree with the government having a "Kill Switch". People use the internet everyday to communicate with family, friends, to shop, & even do work. The government should never have that much power to stop our everyday use of the internet.
ReplyDelete-Kayla Vaughn
I agree with Kayla, people should have more protection and privacy on the web but users still should only post things online that that expect to be read, even if you block it.
ReplyDelete-Calamity Manz
So many people rely on the internet. If Big Brother were to shut it down, it would cause anarchy.
ReplyDeleteScott Gideon
I have to agree with what Chandellier commented on. I am for the safety of the American people and for our country. That is why the majority voted these leaders in. So that they could make these kinds of decisions for us.
ReplyDeleteEmily Lipari
.
I think it would be a good idea to have a kill switch for the safety of the country, but it wouldn't be a good thing since the President himself relies on networking for communication purposes. I also agree with Viktor O, good and bad things can come from a kill switch.
ReplyDeleteBrittany W
I believe the Internet, just like any other type of communication, should be regulated. I do not, however believe a kill switch should be allowed. Many people and businesses rely on internet communication for everyday life and shutting that off would cripple our ability to function at the rate we are now so used to. This would also lead to chaos and confusion which can not possibly benefit anyone, including the Government.
ReplyDelete-Jackie Garrett
I disagree with the goverment haivng a "kill switch", because many people use the internet to talk to family and freinds. In some case that may be the only way for family members to talk to someone if they or in the army or just moved far away from there area.
ReplyDeleteJamian kelly
I agree with David the government alerady has enough power over us.
ReplyDelete-Kayla Vaughn
I agree with Kandra/Brittney... The killswitch should only be for emergency purposes and not for the gov to bully the control over us. But i also agree with another person to go straight to the IP addresses and shut that person down and while shutting terrorists down you could also shut down the billions of pedophiles and the child predator that have surfaced on the web. The internet IS a very dangerous place for the sick and twisted people who have hate and evil in their heart. So God help us ALL.
ReplyDeleteDee B
I don't have an opion one way or the other. I believe as a whole this country relies too much on internet and not enough with socializing in person. I know that the country "runs" on the internet and I understand the reasons for having internet for things, but I think too much emphasis is being placed on facebook, applications for cell phones and other items that are to be considered "social" outlets but we vary rarely actually talk to other people any more. I know that I'm extremly old fashioned and not up with todays expectations of what I should be or not be doing, but I would rather hear someones voice that see it in badly written grammer.
ReplyDeleteCara
I agree with Emily. The government knows what's going on in the world. They deal with those issues everyday. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to keep the citizens of this country safe and if they need to pull the plug then by all means DO IT!! But when it's safe again please plug it back up! lol I need to get on facebook and see what's going on in my neck of the woods. lol
ReplyDeleteTiffany J
VICTOR, THATS WHY EGYPT IS SOMEWHAT IN A UPROAR PEOPLE CHOOSING, THIS SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO THE GOVERNMENT, IT ALREADY IS WEATHER WE WANT TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT. THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLS JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING BUT OUR EMOTIONS
ReplyDeleteSHARELLA
There should not be a kill switch on the internet because it is not just used for social networking. The internet is also used for schools, colleges, government reasons, and to know what is happening around us. The president can find a way to band certain websites, but he cannot take away an educational or government website.
ReplyDeleteLauren Rice:CPT 101-A04
I agree with Justin the government is just getting too power hungry and they know the internet will be the ultimate thing to dictate.
ReplyDeleteJensen
I'm afraid I have to disagree with my friend Emily. The government doesn't always know whats best for us.
ReplyDeleteScott Gideon
I agree with Tiffany J. If they do end up creating a Kill Switch for the internet, it should only be used for an Emergency!
ReplyDelete-Jackie Garrett
I believe if there is a possiblity for the government to disable or evoke a kill switch for the internet that would simply cause pure chaos. I, personally think technology is the root of evil, it hinders manual effort and it is destroying the natural world in which we live. However, I am aware of the internet and its many advantages and how much our society relies on it. Businesses, corporations, and students everywhere rely on the internet to complete their jobs, and to access schooling. Many students are solely online students as well as businesses being solely online to work from home. The loss academically and economically would be huge if the government were to engage any type of "kill switch."
ReplyDelete-Sarah Werkin
I disagree with Lauren about there being no kill switch. The government's job is to protect our country from harm and wrong doing.
ReplyDeleteBrittany W
I agree with Candice because our country should not be held responsible for what is happening in Egypt. Egypt was in a protest we weren't. If our country get involved with the crime in Egypt a big war may begin.
ReplyDeleteLauren Rice:CPT 101-A04
I agree with kayla the internet should offer a better security and privacy. If they had that then you wouldnt have to worry about anything, but i also disagree with her I dont think the government should have a kill switch they have enough power as it is
ReplyDeleteJamian k.
I have to agree with Emily Lipari. I know the government has too much power, but if it is seen as a real threat to the people than there should be a switch.
ReplyDeleteCara
I think that everyone relies on the internet for everything now a days, and if the government feels threated by the internet then the government needs to find some other way to overcome this problem. thats their jobs, they dont need to punish the rest of the country.
ReplyDelete^jensen sorry!
ReplyDeleteKILL SWITCH IS NECESSARY FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOULD THE GOVERNMENT BE IN CONTROL OF IT NO YOU CAN BE YOUR OWN KILL SWITCH
ReplyDeleteYOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE AND HAVE ACCESS TO. AS FOR AS CHILDERN, WHEN I AM NOT THERE YES GOVERNMENT CAN KILL ALL NEGATIVE IMAGES VIA WEB

I have a ??? DO YOU THINK THE PEOPLE IN EGYPT ARE THINKING ABOUT GOING TO WORK OR SCHOOL??
ReplyDeleteTiffany J
I agree that there should be some kind of restrictions, but I do not agree that they should be able to turn it off for everyone. Before they even try to shut it all down they should try to tighten their security to keep their information protected.
ReplyDeleteLaura
I agree with Cara, I like the internet but people do rely on it too much, things arent very personal anymore, its either facebook or texting.
ReplyDeleteLaura
I feel that the kill switch would be a good idea if it is being use to stop war. To many of our soldiers are being killed beacuse of the war so if a kill switch is being place to stop attacks against the U.S then I am all for it.
ReplyDeleteKeshia J
Americans rely on the internet nowadays to function in everyday life. If the goverment used a "kill switch" many businesses would have to shutdown and life as we know it wouldnt be the same. Using a "kill switch" to me is a violation of my rights as an american citizen.
ReplyDeleteShannon Mason
I disagree with the "Kill Switch" because the government has to much control already. Why would they want to shut down the Internet. The Internet is very beneficial and people use it everyday. But if there ever was a need to do a killswitch because of a attack then by all means do it but other then that, no they shouldn't shut down the Internet.
ReplyDeleteLaLa Rodgers
I think that the government should have a kill switch to turn off our internet, but only in case of an emergency. Also, The government should let the people of America know ahead of time before they turn the internet off because we rely greatly on the internet today.
ReplyDelete- Megan Worthy
It would probably be a good idea to have a kill switch in some ways, one way would be because of threats on the internet. It would also be a bad idea in some ways also, because there are so many people that use the internet and it would be unfair to just turn it off from everyone all at once. They just need to add more security and everything would be ok.
ReplyDeleteNoelle P.
I don't think its right for them to have a kill switch because, to many schools, work places, gov. places and ect. use the internet everyday. But if they did ever use one, the people live when they didn't have internet back then.
ReplyDeleteI think that the government should have a kill switch and be prepared to use it if necessary. They are responsible for our safety and if that is what it would take to protect American's, then by all means kill it.
ReplyDeleteLaura Lee
Yes the US could get a kill switch over the internet if it was under attack.I do not think the US would get a kill switch for any other reason because the internet is everything.
ReplyDeletewendy M.
I don't think its right for them to have a kill switch because, to many schools, work places, gov. places and ect. use the internet everyday. But if they did ever use one, the people live when they didn't have internet back then.
ReplyDeleteTiffany J
I agree with Shannon because she is right, people use Internet everyday as well as businesses. America would not be the same at all.!
ReplyDeleteLaLa Rodgers
I do agree with the government having a "kill switch" because they akready have so much control. If one person or a group of people are causing problems they should track down that computer and shut down the internet for that person only, not punish everyone. Today people rely on the internet for everything and to shut it off would cause major problems.
ReplyDeleteHeather, D
I understand the concept of protection, but do not think a kill switch is necessary. Our society and technology is advanced enough to just "kill" the certain thing that is causing a problem. Too many of us rely on the internet for our education and jobs.
ReplyDeleteKaylee
I disagree with Keshia My husband was in Iraq for 16 plus months war is not the answer, but we are over there fighting to help keep the peace. If we pull out permaturely you may very well see the next world war in your lifetime. I dont believe the internet has much to do with wars. Wars will happen with or without the internet.
ReplyDeleteShannon Mason
I would agree with the US having a kill switch. However...like most of you have been saying, I think the people should participate in deciding whether or not the killswitch should be flipped and when. I also agree with the simple fact that the government has enough power if not too much...I know our country is a democracy but, Whatever happend to we the people???
ReplyDeleteSean C.
I agree with Megan Worthy's comment, in case of an emergency, the government should have a kill switch. They should let us know in advance if at all possible too. We do all rely heavily on the use of the internet on a daily basis, whether it be fun, work, or communication.
ReplyDeleteLaura Lee
I agree with LaLa because they do have government does have a lot of control & if they did need to shut it down then do it but not just cause they have the power too.
ReplyDeleteTiffay J
I agree with Haily M. why would they shut down the internet unless there was a threat, when they could possibly be making money off of it!!
ReplyDeleteNoelle P.
I agree with Tiffany, I do not think the government should have one because like she said too many people rely on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jackie Garret, I think they should shut down some of the networks like facebook, twitter, myspace, etc. Those things just cause problems. If there are families that communicate through internet then they can always talk through windows live with thier web cam or something like that.
ReplyDeleteVanessa Gomez
I agree with LaLa because they do have government does have a lot of control & if they did need to shut it down then do it but not just cause they have the power too.
ReplyDeleteTiffany J
i disagree because a lot of people rely on the internet.
ReplyDeleteTiffany Chhim
I agree with Tiffany, I do not think the government should have one because like she said too many people rely on it.
ReplyDeleteHeather, D
I agree with Keshia J, the internet should be killed if any threats are going on that could cause war or another terrorist attack or anything along those lines. The LAST thing we needs is more American soldiers dying or something else burning down with thousands of Americans dying. If killing the internet will stop some of this from happening, then I am all for it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Keshia J, the internet should be killed if any threats are going on that could cause war or another terrorist attack or anything along those lines. The LAST thing we needs is more American soldiers dying or something else burning down with thousands of Americans dying. If killing the internet will stop some of this from happening, then I am all for it.
ReplyDelete- Megan Worthy
I uderstand all the point of views people have against the kill switch, but I mainly agree with Cara. The internet is use for many things now and days like
ReplyDeletesocializing, business, schools, and government work. But socializing is the big thing, if people just go n talk in person then it will not be many people written in bad grammer.Even thought its the easiest thing to do instead on writing long sententes.
K.J
I agree with Shannon M. Many things that control what we do is provided by the internet. Americans would not know how to respond if something of this magnitude occured.
ReplyDeleteKaylee
Thats a good point Heather. I agree that not everyone should be punished, but If the country WAS at risk. That one person would probably do a good job of covering his tracks...I say we need an anti-terrorist geek squad to track em! =D
ReplyDeleteSean C.
I agree with LaLa. the government should not have to shut the switch just beacsue they have the power to do so.
ReplyDeleteTiffany Chhim
I disagree with the government having a "Kill Switch". Our country relies alot on the internet. I beleive that Cutting it off would only cause an uproar with the american people. If all this stuff would not have happened in Egypt then the government would not even consider putting a "Kill Switch" on the internet.
ReplyDeleteAmber A.
I do not agree with the "kill switch" because the internet for some people is their only commuication with their family. If they were to flip the switch and turn it off they would lose there commuication.
ReplyDeleteTylisha G.
I agree with Tiffany J. The government should not put a kill switch on the internet, because the internet is used for too many schools, businesses, work places etc.
ReplyDeleteAmber A.
I don't agree with the Internet kill switch. Multi-billionaire businesses are run through the Internet. Profits would be lost worldwide.
ReplyDeleteTou Y
I agree with Amy as well when she says that the government should have a kill switch for emergencies only. I would hate to think that I couldn't communicate with my friend in Budapest via Facebook just because the government felt like turning off my internet. However if we were to be threatened somehow through cyberspace, it would be a good thing to have.
ReplyDeleteChristina J
I agree with Noelle P. If the government did have a switch, then doing so in a particular area will be more reasonable. Too many rely on the Internet.
ReplyDeleteTou Y
I would have to agree with the government having a kill switch, it's their job to protect the american people by any means and if that mean having to shut down the internet in case of a attack, then we should learn to deal with it for a while. Think about what we did when internet wasnt as available as it is now.
ReplyDeletePorsha S.
This is true Tou Y, but it is also scary to think that our great nation could be at any physical risk because of something on the internet. So, I believe there should be a kill switch for emergencies only.
ReplyDeleteChristina J
If the security of our country is in peril, then our government should take whatever measures it needs to in order to keep us safe. If congress must first agree, then the President will not be able to make the decision alone. No one person will be "in-charge." We as a country, has survived for over 200 years without the internet. If we can't survive 200 more, then we have become way to dependent on it.
ReplyDeleteL. Long
On the blog about kill switch, I do not think that the government can completely shut down the internet, but I do think that government already has a way to get information. That they view whatever they want, when they want, so what's the use of a shut down
ReplyDeleteI disagree with giving the government a kill switch. Our government already controls too much. Seems like were getting closer and closer to Communism everyday.
ReplyDeleteJay Hardy
I agree with Laura Lee, if the event that we should get a "kill switch" and it does need to be used, than a heads up from the government would be nice.
ReplyDeletePorsha S.
I do not agree. I am a very strong believer in freedom of speech and freedom of press. I stronger doubt it is even possible considering the fact that independance is what defines Americans, and there's no way every single provider would ever allow this to happen. I can't think of a way that the internet could cause a problem so major that it needs shutting down, that other forms of communication can't also make worse. Since it is impossible to shut down the internet then it is diffently impossible to take all communication from Americans. Not gonna happen!
ReplyDeleteTeresa R
I disagree with the idea of an internet kill switch being in the hands of American lawmakers. Our government already assumes too much power, corruption, and greed. They would find a way to pass new laws that ultimately would give them complete control over any sentence written or spoken and they should not be allowed to posess that temptation.
ReplyDeleteTeresa H.
I dissagree with having a kill switch because most people benifit from having the internet to do research. Plus so many people's lives exist on there. However if the switch was used there could be severe consequences such as riots.
ReplyDeleteMichael H.
I agree with Porsha who said basically the same thing I did. We must be protected first and foremost. The internet is a luxury. We could live without it!
ReplyDeleteL.Long
I think it would have to be a very extreme situation for a "kill switch" to be enforced. I think the safety of our nation should be first. At the same time, I also think that they should have procedures in place to support all affected areas. The internet is used by schools, the government, countless businesses, and homes across the nation.
ReplyDeleteKimberly N.
I agree with Jay Hardy. Our government needs to have their authority cut down to a more minimal state, not increased for any purposes resembling control.
ReplyDeleteTeresa H.
I agree with Amber. If ever in a situation such as Egypt, killing the internet would make things worse and make Americans protest more.
ReplyDeleteTeresa R
I don't think the government should have a kill switch>>> I believe that if the uprising in Egypt was proppelled by chats on social networks then it was just a new way of organization, those people were tired of being bullied by their government and with or without the internet would have fought back. Maybe the internet helped to make things quicker but the inevitable did not change, they were tired of the way things were and willing to fight to change them our democracy we have here has long been in to much control of our lives I do not believe in Anarchy but think the gov. long ago overstepped their boundaries and also believe that if they want the internet shut down it will be done just like if we want to organise an overthrow that will be done too organization would just take longer without technology but any sensible person can look back to the hippies and see it possible;even if not so effective.
ReplyDeleteKristi O.
I agree with you Hay Hardy. The government already controls us too much. And the internet is no exception. They already have control over it but we just dont know how how much.
ReplyDeleteL.Bell
I think that the US gov. doesn't have that much power to shut down the internet in US right now. Because the big private companies that provide access to internet will never give away their power to the government. And people are so crazy about their rights and privacy that they will revolt if their rights were to be bothered.
ReplyDeleteYevgeniy U.
I agree with Teresa H.. The government does have too much power. I mean honestly what dont they control???
ReplyDeleteJay H.
I agree with Jay Hardy, the government does have too much power and more and more of our freedom is being restrained every day. So I agree that it does feel a bit like communism
ReplyDeleteYes I agree that we should have a kill switch. Just in case someone did try to attack us the government would be there to protect us. It may be a disadvantage in other areas like staying in contact with family and friends, but I rather be protected. That is what the government is for. Lynette B.
ReplyDeleteI so agree with Teresa H. our freedom has been exploited to the max and law makers views are deffinately stunted by their need for personal gain>>....
ReplyDeleteKristi O.
I agree with L.Long. Safety first. This nation lived before the internet,it would be able to after.
ReplyDeleteKimberly N.
I do not agree with L. Longs argument that just because we did not need the internet to survive does not mean we should not use it. We also survived 200 years without cell phones, gps, imbedded comuputers and various medical advancements. This does not mean that in times of crisis people should not have acess to them or the internet. From the information given above however it seems highly unlikely that this bill's intent is to to shut down the internet but to protect it from cyberwarfare so that the public can use it.
ReplyDeleteStephan T.
I agree with Jay Hardy, the government does have too much power and more and more of our freedom is being restrained every day. So I agree that it does feel a bit like communism
ReplyDeleteMichael H.
I agree with justin the gorvorment already has to much power
ReplyDeleteI agree with "kill switch," if an emergency arose. We depend too much on the internet and put too much information out there,so if shutting it off could protect us in some way, then I am all for it!
ReplyDeleteSharon B.
On the blog about kill switch, I do not think that the government can completely shut down the internet, but I do think that the government already has a way to find information. That they view whatever they want, when they want, so what's the use of a shut down
ReplyDeleteL.Bell
I agree with Tiffany J. There are other ways of communicating.Lynette B.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree that the president should have a kill switch. The internet is a vital form of communication for many people. Now as I mentioned before, I do not believe that is the intent of this bill. It is to protect it.
ReplyDeleteStephan T.
I also agree with Porsha, if the government does decide to use the "kill switch" they should try to give the world notice. That way thy can try to prepare theirselves.
ReplyDeleteSharon B.
I agree with Teresa H. The government has too much power.
ReplyDeleteNikolay K.
I agree that there should be some kind of switch to shut down the internet. Why because countries have hackers that work for them and they spy on other countries. If an assult opperation is documented on a computer then you may risk that some nurd will hack in and sell inforamion to the enemy. Also Countries may send out propagandas in interned whichs is not good if people already don't like the gov. About privacy even if the gov. monitors internet the president will not snich on you that you are cheating on your wife. They just don't care they got other problems. This can acualy help the wife she can get more money from her husband if she divorced him.
ReplyDeleteYevgeniy U.
i disagree with that. there is no reason to have a kill switch. the government has to much power. if there is a threat the government should just track teh computer and shut it down
ReplyDeleteNikolay K
I disagree that the goverment should have a killswitch for the internet. The internet is a free highway of information for people to use at there own disgresion. If the goverment wants to control information that comes to people through the internet all they are doing is shelling off the country from the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteSebastian S.
Thanks for all of the wonderful comment who are both pro & con the kill switch. I would like to believe that its not about goverment control but instead about self preservation of our country & protecting ourselves. With the internet and the web our borders are no longer tangible meaning with cyberspace there isn't clear borders for our country. When the bill was first introduced it was because there was fear that hackers may be able to hack into someplace like the Hoover Dam and cause chaos. It was later stated that the controls for the dam aren't connected to the Internet so it was not possible to hack into them. There are many areas of our goverment that provide national security as well as control other important functions such as power grids, telecommunications that are online. I think it is feasible that with the hackers evolving as much as the technology being developed and with viruses, and worms being more destructive it is scary to think that an attack on the US could come virtually from anywhere in the world. Tracking the cybercriminals become more & more difficult because they can hide behind the new technology by having their ip addresses bounce from one place to another worldwide making it almost impossible to pinpoint their actual location. This is one reason the FBI developed a department dedicated for cybercrimes. That being said, the chances of a kill switch actually being passed and happening is little or none. The goverment may have security guidelines for the major ISP companies that control a lot of the Internet access but american companies & the american people aren't going to let the goverment take control of Internet access. The Internet isn't a right but a privilegebut it is one that affects so much of our lives that our companies & the goverment will take every possible measure of protecting ourselves but the Kill Switch doesn't appear to be an option for the United States.
ReplyDeleteI agree .....
ReplyDeleteCoco
I agree with the government having a way to shut down the internet in cases of national security. I don't think that would violate the 1st admendment and if it keeps citizens even a little bit safer it's worth it.
ReplyDeleteTracy White
I also agree with Brittany W.
ReplyDeleteTracy W
I feel that an internet kill switch for the united states would not be a bad thing. The device would not be something to invade our privacy or control us. We as a country are always vulnerable to attacks. This would be something that is under the governments control and we should trust that our president would use it wisely. We elect a president to run this country and protect it, we should allow him to do so. I am all in favor of anything that will protect us and keep us safe.
ReplyDelete- Coire Christie -
I disagree with Victoria B's comment. She says the internet is used for too much and she would be bored without it. The internet is used for alot today, but the world functioned and survived before the internet and it could do it again. Besides they would not destroy the internet, they would temporarily shut it down in order to save lives. Is your facebook page and ebay shopping more important than peoples lives? I think not. And as for being bored without the internet......use your imagination.
ReplyDelete-Coire Christie-
I dont think the government should have the right to shut down the internet. Too many people use it and its a very useful tool in todays society.
ReplyDelete-Latonya Wilkins-
I disagree with Tracey W...it doesnt mean it will protect national security...its world wide..
ReplyDelete-Latonya Wilkins-
The government is here to protect us. Therefore, I feel that if their is an actual threat to America and the American people then they should do whatever it takes to protect us. I do feel that the government tends to stretch the truth sometimes. They should have to prove their reasons for doing this if it were ever neccessay.
ReplyDeleteDeandra Murphy
I don't think that the government should have a kill switch. They already have too much control over us, and the internet is too crucial to today's society.
ReplyDelete-Jennifer Fricks
I agree with Corie Christie because our country should be protected at all cost. If our country were under attack then it is the governments duty to protect us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Latonya, too many people and businesses rely on the internet.
ReplyDelete-Jennifer Fricks
I agree with Corie Christie because our country should be protected at all cost. If our country were under attack then it would be the governments duty to protect us.
ReplyDeleteDeandra Murphy
I agree with Jennifer Fricks...For one thing, not a lot of people can afford to pay a psychologist just to talk and ask for help or opinion on their specific situation.
ReplyDeleteCarla Casurao
I do not agree on the kill switch on internet.
ReplyDeleteFor one thing, internet has bundles of information that can educate ourself.
Carla
i think the internet should not have a kill switch because its not the goverments decision to decide weather we use the web or not.
ReplyDeletetyler H.
i agree with with coco.
ReplyDeletetyler H.
I disagree with the Kill-Switch on internet. Our country relies far too heavily on internet use to communicate and the lack of fast, reliable communications would destroy many businesses and entrepreneurships which define American capitalism. That and, it would, quite frankly, suck without social networking.
ReplyDeleteBrad E.
I disagree with Deandra M. Threats to National Security should be defined as material objects such as, people, weapons, and other destructive forces. The lack of internet doesn't HARM people.
ReplyDeleteBrad E.
